The American Revolution (or Revolutionary War) took place between 1775-1778. The war arose from many conflicts between Britain and the 13 American colonies. Britain started to pass acts in the colonies, which angered many settlers. Some of the acts were the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Act of 1767, and the Tea Act of 1773. After the Tea act was passed, many colonists became angry, and tried to resist. Eventually, a group of colonists dressed up as Mohawk Indians, and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.
Many more revolts occurred, but finally the first shots were fired on April 19, 1775 at Lexington and Concord. This was the start of the war. The beginning of the war started with many British victories. The turning point for the U.S. in the war wasn't until September 19, at the Battle of Saratoga. This turning point in the battle gained America's alliance with France.
In the end of 1777 to the beginning of 1778, the American troops stopped in Valley Forge during the long, harsh winter. Washington's troops benefited from training from the French during the winter. Eventually, on October 19, 1781, the American troops surrounded General Cornwallis and the British forces at the Battle of Yorktown. This caused the British to surrender, letting the U.S. gain the last victory. But the war wasn't over. Not until September 3, 1783, when the Treaty of Paris was signed, was the war between the U.S and Britain officially ended. This treaty recognized the independence of the U.S and officially ended the war.
